Fascinante.
Supongo que como a muchos otros lectores, el descubrimiento de la figura del misionero jesuita castellano Pedro Páez ha sido toda una sorpresa. No tenía ni idea de su existencia, y a raíz de la publicación –y la lectura por parte de algunos- de mi propia novela El templo del cielo;, hubo quien me recomendó este pequeño gran libro escrito por el incansable viajero Javier Reverte. No me ha decepcionado en absoluto y agradezco de corazón la recomendación.
Javier Reverte –qué bien escribe este hombre- bucea en la vida de un casi desconocido jesuita del siglo XVI-XVII, Pedro Páez que, entre otras cosas insignificantes, es considerado como el primer europeo que alcanzó a ver las fuentes del llamado Nilo Azul, uno de los dos grandes ramales junto con el Nilo Blanco que, a partir de la sudanesa ciudad de Jartum, conforman el impresionante río africano. También es el primero que nos cuenta a qué sabe el café, mucho antes que el sobrevalorado George Clooney. Páez fue otro tipo de héroe, de los de verdad.
El que me haya leído un poco (así, en singular, uno) sabrá de mi admiración por las gestas jesuitas de aquella época. No tanto por su carácter religioso, sino por la carga de aventura y de desafío personal que representaron, amén de la singular naturaleza de las mismas. Siguiendo los consejos del fundador de la Compañía, Ignacio de Loyola, muchos hombres sabios se adentraron en lo desconocido, tanto en el Nuevo Mundo como en los más antiguos –Asia y África-, armados sólo de su fe y de un talento poco común. Políglotas, diplomáticos, científicos, literatos… dominaban casi cualquier rama del saber humano con el fin último de convencer a los más extraños reyes y emperadores de los más lejanos lugares de la fe verdadera. Y así lo hizo Francisco Javier en Japón, y luego Matteo Ricci en China, por ejemplo. Y los que le siguieron, -los que centran mi propia novela citada-, como los padres Adam Schall o Ferdinand Verbiest, convertidos de facto en la mano derecha (e izquierda) del mismísimo emperador de los chinos. ¡Cómo hubiera cambiado el mundo –difícil saber en qué dirección- de haber logrado sus propósitos! De aquellas aventuras nos quedan sus escritos –qué magnífica costumbre, la correspondencia jesuita-, con sus avatares, experiencias, descripciones, vivencias y un sinfín de prodigios.
No conocía la enorme figura –paradójicamente humilde- de Pedro Páez. Ni yo, ni por lo visto y según nos cuenta Javier Reverte, casi nadie. De la mano del viajero convertido en escritor (o a la inversa) uno puede sumergirse en el África de aquella época incierta, del choque de religiones, de las cruentas batallas y las costumbres singulares de los que la habitaban. Pedro Paéz (1564-1622) fue el gran consejero del emperador etíope, Susinius, y uno de los misioneros jesuitas más destacados de su época. Sin embargo, apenas hemos tenido noticias de quién fue y qué hizo, y posiblemente podamos homenajearlo ahora gracias, precisamente, al libro de Javier Reverte. Al menos, por lo que puedo ver, este libro que tengo en mis manos vio la luz en el año 2001. Y consiguió que Pedro Páez recibiera poco después reconocimiento en su propia villa natal –Olmeda de las Fuentes- pasados tantos años, así como la traducción al castellano de su magna obra que lleva el conciso título de Historia de Etiopía, y que acaba de ser editado. Antes sólo teníamos -tenía Reverte y unos pocos más- noticia de su versión portuguesa, así como de algunos escasos textos entresacados y utilizados por eruditos de la época, como mi admirado y nunca bien ponderado Athanasius Kircher, el hombre que lo sabía todo.
Y según he terminado el delicioso Dios, el diablo y la aventura, llega a mis manos un nuevo reto lector firmado por Javier Reverte, Un otoño romano en el que espero encontrarme de nuevo con la apasionante capital italiana. Ciudad que también yo mismo intenté reflejar –más casualidades- en mi anterior novela El castillo de las estrellas. Y sí, coincido con el propio Reverte aún más: pocos sitios tan sugerentes como el Campo de Fiore: la hoguera de Giordano Bruno junto al ocio de los jóvenes romanos. Toda una maravillosa paradoja.
